Odisha emerge East Zone T20 champions

Hosts Odisha emerged East Zone champions of the Syed Mushtaqu Ali Trophy T20 Tournament despite going down to Bengal by one run in the last league match here at Barabati Stadium today. But the hard-fought win proved in vain for last year`s zonal league toppers Bengal as they failed to qualify for super league stage of the inter-state tournament.

Jharkhand beat Assam by eight wickets in their truncated last league match earlier in the day to secure a ticket for the super league. Both Odisha and Jharkhand finished with 12 points each, winning three matches and losing one. But the former grabbed the No 1 position in the league table on the basis of net run rate (+2.025), while Jharkhand (-0.392) finished second.

Chasing a victory target of 169 and needing 18 runs in the last over, Odisha almost romped home with Suryakant Pradhan scoring 14 runs in the first four balls, hitting a six and a four in the process. But the home team fumbled at the finish as Pradhan and Alok Mangaraj were run out while going for the second run in the last two deliveries.
